The splendid architectural blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles makes this wonderful city to explore.

traku_pilisThe town as well as its surroundings started developing in the XIII century as a state centre. According to annals, Grand Duke Gediminas after a successful hunt found a beautiful place not far from the then capital Kernave and decided to build a castle here. That is how a new castle was built in Senieji Trakai, which at that time was called Trakai. The town of Trakai was first mentioned in German annals in 1337, which is regarded to be the official date of its foundation. When Grand Duke Gediminas finally settled in Vilnius, his son the Duke Kestutis inherited Senieji Trakai. This is the birthplace of the most famous ruler of Lithuania – Vytautas Didysis.

kernaveDuring this excursion you will discover Kernave, one of the oldest centres of Lithuania. Kernave was the capital of Lithuania in 12c. Today there is a huge protection wall of five mounds. If you visit Kernave on June 23, you will have an excellent opportunity to celebrate the Mid Summer Night, Rasos, as it is called here. During the Mid Summer Night celebration among other things you will see how ancient traditions are observed. People dance, sing and make fires all the night.

On July 6-9, there is another festival held in Kernave. It is dedicated to prehistoric and early middle ages way of living, handicrafts, spiritual and material heritage. You will have a chance to spring a flint, to burn a pot or to coin. During this celebration you will also relax in the natural surroundings, listen to ancient music and taste Lithuanian national cuisine.

You can see all four areas of Lithuania as they looked 100 years ago. The museum displays about 80 000 exhibits. Some of the houses and implements were actually moved here from their original locations. In the summer months you may even see workers in the fields dressed in original costumes and children singing songs while weaving wreaths of flowers.

Rye bread is one of the oldest and main meals in Aukstaitija. Here people have bread for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are two traditional kinds of bread: scalded and leavened. Scalded bread comes from the old times, whereas leavened bread has been baked only since the beginning of 20 century.

palusePotatoes are widely considered as the second bread. They are eaten all year round. The main dishes made from potatoes are the cepelinai, vedarai and potato pancakes.

The mead, made from natural honey, together with kvass and beer are the oldest known traditional drinks. The locals are also fond of apple and berry wine.

On this trip you will see the Hill of Crosses, a unique place which the pope John Paul II visited by in 1993. You will get to know the history of the Siauliai city as well.

You will also see a magnificent Burbiskiai manor, which was mentioned in the history in 17 century for the first time. A picturesque park by the manor, occupying 28 hectares is famous for its ponds with 15 islets in them. You will take a tour to Kleboniskis village exhibition and see village buildings typical to 19 c. and the beginning of 20 century, some of which are still inhabited today, have an evening event with musicians and overnight in the manor itself.
